The Opal Trail by Air - 2 Days

Here is an opportunity to experience the elements of the Australian Outback, travelling with an expert guide in Aircraft and 4WD comfort. On this adventure you will discover the world-famous opal fields of Coober Pedy and Andamooka, with scenery that looks like a mix of the Wild West and the moon! You'll meet the people of the country, experience the history and the culture and travel through some of the most diverse countryside on earth.

Follow the Opal Trail and discover a real Australian gem!

Day 1 - Leaving the General Aviation Terminal, your aircraft travels to Coober Pedy (an Aboriginal word meaning 'White man in a hole'). On arrival you will be transferred to your accommodation. After lunch, enjoy a guided tour through this intriguing mining town. The tour visits the famous underground dwellings as well as giving an insight into how opal is mined. The tour provides a fascinating insight into how people adapt lifestyles to fit in with a harsh environment. The evening is spent at the famous 'Desert Cave Hotel', which features underground rooms and even an underground bar. There will be ample opportunity to sample the opal wares and maybe buy a special souvenir!

Day 2 - The next day, your aircraft departs Coober Pedy for Roxby Downs, near South Australia's second opal centre, Andamooka, where you will learn that 'opals ain't opals' - and the same applies to opal towns. The day spent around Andamooka experiencing the contrasts between these frontier towns. The day at Andamooka includes an entertaining town tour and a chance to don a hat, take a pick and mine some opal. From Andamooka, the flight returns to Adelaide to complete the circuit of the Opal Trail.

Tour departs daily 08:30 at the general aviation terminal and returns 17:30 the following day

Airport transfer from/to accommodation
Return charter flight from Adelaide to Coober Pedy and Roxby Downs.
1 nights accommodation at the Desert Cave Hotel (B&B)
Tour of Coober Pedy
Tour of Andamooka

Important Notes:

Light aircraft operators are very stringent about weight limits.
Luggage is restricted to 15kg per person. This is a safety issue.
The Australian summer is very hot, especially in the outback.
The 4WD and hotels are air-conditioned.
All the same, the outside temperatures often remain above 40 ° C during the day between December and February.
